How to Make Terremoto El Hoyo (Chillean White Wine with pineapple ice-cream ‘The Earthquake’) 40
Jul15
I saw this drink on Anthony Bourdain’s ‘No Reservations’ Episode on Chile when he went to eat at a popular Hot-Spot in Santiago Chile. So i googled high and low and found the recipe to be a great secret, well not for long! As long as I can get the name of the wine and get a hold of some pineapple ice-cream, you have got the drink made.
The Concoction
Ingredients
- White Wine called Vino Pipeño (pip-AIN-yo) wikipedia!
- Large Glass Pitcher
- Pineapple Ice-cream (I prefer Haagan Daas )
Directions
- Add white wine to pitcher,
- Add about 4-5 scoops of the Ice-Cream
- Take the wooden spoon and give it a quick spin, or you can use a hand blender to mix it all together.
Voila, enjoy your delicious beverage.
UPDATE:
According to user: amapola on discovery channel forums, she says
I’m not sure if you could find that kind of wine because it’s not white wine but a special one called “pipeño”. Here’s an explanation of what it is: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vino_pipe%C3%B1o
Then you add pineapple ice cream and grenadine, rum or fernet.

Thank You! I watched the show last night and I’m googling all the dishes I saw on there.
you are welcome
I was looking after the show also but couldn’t find it… Thanks!
Greatings, bbqmasala.com – da best. Keep it going!
Have a nice day
thanks buddy
Thank you!! I’ve been looking for this recipe since the episode aired!
your welcome
Is sherbet a good substitute for Ice cream? The dairy with the alcohol sounds funny to me.
Sherbet should be fine.
I have heard some say it’s made with pineapple sherbert. So is ice cream better?
thats what one recipe site says.
Do you use a whole bottle of wine with the four/five scoops? Is the Chilean White Wine dry (in case I have to find something similar)?
Thank you. Any other advice about this drink is much appreciated.
The Wine is actually dry, here is a wikipedia link thanks
THANK YOU!
I’ve wanted to drink one of these from the moment I saw this episode also! A Google search brought you in as the top hit, and found no others. your research is appreciated.

nice site u have there Chris
Thanks for posting about this, I would like to read more about this topic.
Thank you! We saw the episode and decided to serve it at a party tomorrow night. We only found sherbert so I'm hopeful it's just as good.
Good luck with the recipe, and hope all your guests love it!
Thanks for posting it. I had this while in Chile and it was really good. My sis saw Tony's show and insisted I make it for her bday this weekend. glad you put the recipe up so now I know I have it right!
I've also experimented with pineapple and grapefruit juices. Both incredible but not the creamy texture of the ice creams. Try also adding thin slices of pineapple….sweet.
hmmm interesting, I love the thought of fresh fruit! It always makes things a bit more interesting!
i will (as bittman) freeze pineapple juice and pineapple chunks and blend with few tbllspoons yogurt and bit sugar and tbl. of water then add the white wine. icecream to me makes it a milkshake.
cheers mate I will add that to the post as suggestions!
Tony mentioned that he got quite buzzed by the drink so I'd imagine there's an extra little "something" added to kick it up a couple of notches.
may be some pineapple liquor like Malibu??
Where do you find/purchase the wine in the US ???
Try any major liquor store brand, like total wine, or goody goody!
Ok. I've tried this several times and pineapple sherbet/ice cream just aren't pungent enough. You'll have to add some pineapple juice to the the mix to overide the effect of the wine. Hey, try just pineasppkle juice or even grapefruit juice. Both are terrific!
what type of wine are you using? I use a very mild, dry white wine. I'll get the name next time I save the bottle.
ive been searching everywhere but cant find vino pipeno!! where do u find the dang thing!!
Thats a good question bud, I get it at a place called Total Wine.
oooh thanks so much for the recipe! now i gotta find me some vino pipeno!
you have a BFF?
lucky- sheesh
So, I'm glad you guys figured this thing out because I can tell you right now that K.J. white with peach ice cream is freakin' gross.
if you want a real terremoto i suggest go to La Piojera in Santiago the only place for the real thing
interesting!
I wonder what that dark liquor is ey? If u find out let us know and I can edit the post to reflect that. Thanks!
Hmmmm i used Barefoot Moscato the other day and it came out pretty good!
It is a shot of Pisco. I am currently studying abroad in Chile. Pisco is a grape based liquor. I don't know if you can find it in the states but I will be looking when i get back! Good luck!
I just got back from el hoyo and this is the best drink ever… I think there is more to this than just ice cream and wine tho… their "secret sauce"
