How to Make Terremoto El Hoyo (Chillean White Wine with pineapple ice-cream ‘The Earthquake’) 40

Jul15

I saw this drink on Anthony Bourdain’s ‘No Reservations’ Episode on Chile when he went to eat at a popular Hot-Spot in Santiago Chile.  So i googled high and low and found the recipe to be a great secret, well not for long! As long as I can get the name of the wine and get a hold of some pineapple ice-cream, you have got the drink made.

The Concoction

Ingredients

  1. White Wine called Vino Pipeño  (pip-AIN-yo) wikipedia!
  2. Large Glass Pitcher
  3. Pineapple Ice-cream (I prefer Haagan Daas )
Directions
  1. Add white wine to pitcher,
  2. Add about 4-5 scoops of the Ice-Cream
  3. Take the wooden spoon and give it a quick spin, or you can use a hand blender to mix it all together.
Voila, enjoy your delicious beverage.
El Hoyo Website
UPDATE:
According to user: amapola on discovery channel forums, she says
I’m not sure if you could find that kind of wine because it’s not white wine but a special one called “pipeño”. Here’s an explanation of what it is: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vino_pipe%C3%B1o
Then you add pineapple ice cream and grenadine, rum or fernet.

Is sherbet a good substitute for Ice cream? The dairy with the alcohol sounds funny to me.

  6. l.d. says:

I have heard some say it’s made with pineapple sherbert. So is ice cream better?

  7. Aaron says:

Do you use a whole bottle of wine with the four/five scoops? Is the Chilean White Wine dry (in case I have to find something similar)?

Thank you. Any other advice about this drink is much appreciated.

Thank you! We saw the episode and decided to serve it at a party tomorrow night. We only found sherbert so I'm hopeful it's just as good.

Thanks for posting it. I had this while in Chile and it was really good. My sis saw Tony's show and insisted I make it for her bday this weekend. glad you put the recipe up so now I know I have it right!

I've also experimented with pineapple and grapefruit juices. Both incredible but not the creamy texture of the ice creams. Try also adding thin slices of pineapple….sweet.

i will (as bittman) freeze pineapple juice and pineapple chunks and blend with few tbllspoons yogurt and bit sugar and tbl. of water then add the white wine. icecream to me makes it a milkshake.

  14. Don says:

Tony mentioned that he got quite buzzed by the drink so I'd imagine there's an extra little "something" added to kick it up a couple of notches.

  15. Bob A. Booey says:

Where do you find/purchase the wine in the US ???

  16. dave semick says:

Ok. I've tried this several times and pineapple sherbet/ice cream just aren't pungent enough. You'll have to add some pineapple juice to the the mix to overide the effect of the wine. Hey, try just pineasppkle juice or even grapefruit juice. Both are terrific!

  23. sidparmar says:

Hmmmm i used Barefoot Moscato the other day and it came out pretty good!

  24. Ryan says:

It is a shot of Pisco. I am currently studying abroad in Chile. Pisco is a grape based liquor. I don't know if you can find it in the states but I will be looking when i get back! Good luck!

  25. Tarah says:

I just got back from el hoyo and this is the best drink ever… I think there is more to this than just ice cream and wine tho… their "secret sauce"
